Styrofoam wrap, surgical tubing, surgical wrap, wood, canvas, Pepto-Bismol™, Immodium AD™, LifeSavers™ and TicTacs™
These pieces are on display at the “Front and Center” exhibition at the Hyde Park Art Center until January 5. They are quite a departure for me and the result of pushing beyond my usual habits of geometric abstraction and into a visceral engagement with own body of work.
There’s a lot in here – old paintings, Renaissance dissection practice, some Foucault stuff on medical clinics, autopsy procedures, the gastrointestinal benefits of licorice and mint, over the counter stomach relievers, repulsion, attraction, theatricality, materiality, photography. It’s really a bit much. A purge, if you will.
But I’ve gotten it out there and that, in itself, is progress.
